Buellton, Solvang and San Luis Obispo

Jordan and I woke up in Buellton today and headed over to Ellen's Danish Pancake House for breakfast.

This is a picture of the place from the side, through a used car lot.

It doesn't look too wonderful from the outside but it was very nice inside and the Danish pancakes, which are actually like large, thin pancakes (but not quite crepes), rolled with anything from blueberries (what I got) to sausage (what Jordan got), were absolutely delicious! I definitely recommend this place. We left Ellen's and headed towards Solvang, a town a few miles east of Buellton. On our way, we encountered this:

And we went in.

Creeptastic

Ostriches are frightening and violent. Emus are okay.

After this, we continued on to Solvang, a city founded by Danes in the early 20th century that features Danish architecture, bakeries, restaurants, statues and museums, making it feel quite a bit different from any other place in California (that I've been to anyway).

We visited this tasting room, where one of the owners of the winery served us some delicious wines and shared some interesting information about the area with us.

Replica of the Little Mermaid statue that is in Copenhagen, Denmark, which is based on the fairytale by Hans Christian Andersen (who was Danish).

"Hans! A fine Christian name. Hans Christian Andersen! What are you, Catholic?"

We visited the Hans Christian Andersen Museum, which was on the second floor of the Book Loft…

…and then visited Santa InĂ©s Mission, a Spanish mission founded in 1804, which is now a museum and is also still an active parish…

…and then visited Figueroa Mountain Brewery.

After tasting some beers and getting a brief tour, we continued on our way north and arrived in San Luis Obispo.

We visited a candy shop and a used CD/record/video game/etc. store, which is one of my favorite things to do! I found a Nerfherder CD, which I was really excited about, and Jordan bought it for me.

And then we headed to Bubblegum Alley, which might sound like some sort of magical place, like Candy Land or Choco Mountain…

…but it is really this.

Our respective contributions.

After littering on the wall, we walked around town and went to check out the Fremont Theater, which was built in 1942 and still shows films today.

While we were inside, the lights came on on the sign, which was really cool!

After this, we went and got dinner at the Black Sheep Bar & Grill. And I've got two words for ya: Killer Nachos!

We left SLO and drove up to stay in San Simeon for the night. This was Day 2 and we only drove about 100 miles. There's just too much to see and do!
