Cougars and Lobsters and Bears...Oh My!

Today I went up to Big Bear Lake. This is a town in the mountains northwest of Twentynine Palms. We hiked up to Bertha Peak via the Cougar Crest Trail and then did some of the Pacific Crest Trail. It was a very easy hike and very pretty.

Atop Bertha Peak. Not a very high peak, relatively speaking. The elevation is somewhere in the 8,000ft range, but Big Bear Lake is already at such a high elevation that we probably only climbed about 1,200ft.

This is Stanfield Cutoff, a road that runs across the lake, connecting the north and south sides. The two photos below are of the view from either side.

I stayed with friends in Big Bear Lake that night. We played foosball and also went out to some bars.

No joke! You put $2.00 in the machine, and you maneuver the claw thing and try to catch a lobster. If you catch one, they cook it for you at the bar! One of the guys I was there with tried, but failed, so no lobster for us that night.
